Recap -- Ole Miss vs. Tennessee (NCAAB)

Rebels Aggression Leads to Big Home Win

Freshman PG Breein Tyree had 15 pts, 6 ast for the Rebels Tuesday.
It has been a long time since Ole Miss has won a basketball game, or, at least, it sure felt that way.

Ole Miss came into yesterday's game having lost four of their last five, and all four losses have been no contest from the tip to the final buzzer. Ole Miss was coming off two losing efforts in which the Rebels shot 27.5% and 30.9%.

Coming into Tuesday, the Rebels were 10-7, 1-4 in SEC play and desperately needed a win of any kind versus a scary 9-8 Tennessee Vols basketball team. Don't let the record fool you, now...this team lost by 2 AT North Carolina, gave Gonzaga and Wisconsin a scare, and took a solid Oregon team to overtime in the Maui Invitational.

Junior G Deandre Burnett would sit his second straight game with a high-ankle sprain, an injury which occurred in the 69-47 beatdown against Georgia just a week ago. Burnett is averaging 18 PPG (includes the UGA game he played 1/4 of), so his loss has proved significant in the past two blowout losses.

True freshman PG Breein Tyree would get his second straight start, and he was huge for the Rebels Tuesday night. He had 15 points and 6 assists, and AK can't ask for much more out of the freshman who has been playing on a healing knee from a torn ACL for 2-3 months.

Justas Furmanavicius and Terence Davis also posted career highs in points (Furmanavicius with 15 pts, 9 reb; Davis with 20 pts, 11 reb), and they provided much energy for this basketball team...something Ole Miss has not had in awhile.

Ole Miss would gain an 11-point first half lead, but the Vols would storm back to tie the game at the half. Tennessee would use a 19-1 run to take a 13-point second half lead, but a Marcanvis Hymon Sportcenter Top 10 dunk would propel the Rebels to the 11-point victory, 80-69.

During a TV timeout, Ole Miss Senior F Rasheed Brooks had a seizure, and was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford where he was in stable condition. Please keep Rasheed in your thoughts and prayers.

The Rebels would end up shooting 48% from the field, and UT finished shooting 35%, mostly because of the Rebels energy on defense. Ole Miss was 1-14(7.1%) from the 3-point line, and in order to become the team they can be, 3-point shooting must improve. Ole Miss has the players to make 3's, but if they do not fall, attacking the basket always works, too, as it did in the win yesterday.

Ole Miss heads to Columbia, Missouri, to face Mizzou(5-12, 0-5 SEC) on Saturday. The status of Deandre Burnett and Rasheed Brooks are not yet determined, but it does not seem likely for them to play. This SHOULD be a win for the Rebels, but it is a road game in the SEC...you never know.
